I can’t believe I did that

A couple of weeks ago, one of my bestest friends called with a favor.  She had gotten her mom a yorkie-poo (or yorkie doodle for those that want a slightly more masculine name) while she was visiting a few weeks before.  In the meantime her mom decided that having a puppy was a lot of work and didn’t want the responsibility (who can blame her, puppies are ALOT of work).  So Kellie called asking if we would like the puppy.  She would bring it back from GA when she visited, etc. etc. etc.  I have loved Yorkies since my (then Aunt) and Uncle had one many years ago.  I called Shane, expecting him to say no, but he said yes.  (and without much convincing) So this past Sunday we brought home Chloe.  If the 3 of you that are now reading this blog are wondering, she looks more Yorkie than Doodle.

Bubba (8 y/o boy) had aquired a western painted turtle a few months ago.  Boy does he STINK. He is also a lot of work, and expensive to feed.  No matter what anyone tells you crickets at the petstore are NOT cheap.   Note to self and anyone else:  water turtles are nasty and stinky.  Don’t do it!!!

We had been trying for weeks to convince Bubba that “turtle” (he never named it) needed to go back to the wild.  Nothing convinced  him, until, in one of my late night thoughts, I got it!  We’d offer to trade the turtle for a different kind of creature.   Needless to say Bubba LOVED the idea.  We decided a hamster would be a good choice.  That day I found a hamster cage on craigslist for $5 and Shane happened to be getting his oil changed close to where it was the next day.  And I found a FREE albino hamster (on craigslist) near where he works.  (Who says God doesn’t care about the tiniest things?)  We had not had her home for 5 minutes and Bubba named her Laura.  Bubba is our name giver, so this meant she belonged… unlike “turtle” who never had a name….

This little gal is the sweetest.  Bubba has a Jonah boat (he’s had for years and now uses with his castle) that he puts her in a pushes her all over the house.  “Captain Laura” seems to enjoy herself and Bubba’s having the time of his life.

So in less than a week we’ve added a hamster named Laura and a 13 week Yorkie Doodle named Chloe to our home.  That makes the count 4 children, 3 dogs, 1 hamster, 20ish chickens and 2 turkeys (they have a new home next week, yippee!!!!!).  Would you believe that Shane mentioned that he is considering a Manx cat at some point???(he’s heard their dander doesn’t make allergies like other cats)

Are we gluttons for punishment or what?

Well I guess it’s that time…

I honestly don’t know if anyone is reading my blog since I moved from Homeschoolblogger.  Honestly, it just doesn’t feel the same writing on wordpress as it did on HSB.  HSB is a community of mainly like-minded people with similar goals getting to know one another.  This feels like a hodgepodge of people writing blogs.  But since I haven’t been able to get on HSB for my archives I guess I need to write an intro post.  So here goes:

Shane and I have been married 13 years.  We met in college at a conservative Christian University when I was 27 and he was 18.  We did not date, we courted.  I had never had an experience like that before the fact that I hung the phone up on him one night because he wouldn’t kiss me has becoming a running joke in the family.  :)

The night I met Shane, he was wearing a t-shirt that had a list of all these famous people including Abe Lincoln,  and Albert Einstein “and me”.  I asked him “the question” “so what do all those people and you have in common?”

It was there that I learned about homeschooling.

We were aquaitances, then I spent the next summer in the Memphis inner city doing mission work with a church there.  And the Lord grew me in mighty ways that summer.  Shane belonged to what we lovingly referred to then as “the hoe-down church” they had an overhead projector with their songs on it (before powerpoint) and clapped their hands during worship.   I knew he’d be the only person on campus that would understand where God had grown me over the summer.  So I wrote him a letter that summer and told him about it.  I signed it with a little heart (the way I signed all my notes back then) and his little brother and sister thought that was “a sign” apparently it was :)

We spent long hours sitting on a swing on campus that fall, visiting about all sorts of things.  We were best friends.  But certainly were not dating, although the entire campus thought otherwise.  Then we started talking about it and Shane mentioned this crazy idea of courtship.  It sounded good to me, except for the one incident of hanging up the phone on him when he “didn’t love me enough to kiss me”   Shane did nothing more than a little peck on the lips a handful of times and mostly kissing my forehead before we were married.

He did not really kiss me until we were married.

Having lived in the world most of my life I had never experienced that before.  It was totally different than having men in my life that totally disrespected me.  Shane truly did (and does) love me.

He was 20 and I was 29 when we married. :)

remote controls and bananas

You might be wondering what these two things have in common.  If I didn’t know, I would sure be wondering. Two words… Sweet Cheeks and the  trash can  You see we live in the country so much of our trash goes in our second trash can ( to be burned out back in the burn barrel).

Recently, Sweet Cheeks has discovered how fun it is to put things in the trash can.

A couple of weeks ago, we looked everywhere for the remote control for the TV (gotta have it to watch a movie).  I mean we turned the house upside down.  Couldn’t find it anywhere.  I even looked online to see how much ordering a new one would be, $20.  Yikes.  But Shane took the trash out to be burned  that night and found it in the trash can.

Today, Little Bit asked for a banana.  I turned around to get him one on the counter where they were supposed to be.  They weren’t there.  I called Shane and asked if he had seen them. “no”  So I asked him to get some more.  Shane burned the trash tonight.  Apparently SC’s high chair was to close to the counter…

 Banana Bread anyone?????

Christians and Harry Potter

If Harry Potter normalizing witchcraft isn’t enough for believers in the saving faith of Christ maybe this will be– on second thought “believers” that have no problem with HP may not have a problem with this either.

One more post Halloween

This came through on one of my homeschooling yahoo group lists this morning.  Now tell me… if it’s not ”Halloween” related then why have it so close to Halloween.  (yes, I know the obvious– more costumes at this time of year to choose from) but doesn’t a “costume party” near Halloween look like a Halloween party?   I won’t even mention my thoughts on using it to bribe the children to get their schoolwork done, or thoughts on “making it fun “for the children.”

Oh…unless of course it’s a reformation day party.  Dressing up like the reformers could be fun :)

 It’s a costume party at

Home School Skating!!

Next Thursday, Oct. 25th
(specific location information removed for privacy sake)

Please join us for fun and prizes!

You do not have to dress up to join us, it’s just for fun and a great incentive to motivate your children to get their school work done.

Big Prayer request– Social Services

I cannot go into details, but homeschooling friends of ours have been hotlined to social services.  Social workers showed up at their home recently.  This family is not abusive, just falsely accused.  Please pray that God be glorified in this situation.   That God protect this family and that this whole mess will be resolved VERY quickly.

Question????

Last Sunday during Bible study we were talking about Pre-A- and Post Mellennial.  I would fall into the A-Mellennium camp.  I borrowed a book that the class leader made some quotes from because I was just floored at some of the beliefs about Pre-mellenialism.

So… that leads me to this question and comment.

If Jesus is going to set up a literal 1000 year reign, why did he speak in the gospels of not coming to set up an earthly kindgom?  We know that we are aliens in a foreign land– why would it somehow be made an unforeign land?

Please answer in earnest, with kindness and Christian love.

Comment on Comments

I thought about responding in the comments to these thoughts, but I know not everyone goes back and reads the comments.  Melody brought up some good food for thought.  And I’ve had to think hard about her comment.  Iron sharpening iron–gotta love it!

First I want to say that I appreciate the loving spirit with which Melody expressed her thoughts.   If all believers handled their differences this way,  there would be little to no dissention in the church :)

Melody wrote:

3. Okay, here is where I have some questions. First of all, the Bible does not say anything about asking someone for help, but it DOES say to not go into debt. You just said you’d rather go into debt than “beg”. That sounds unbiblical to me. Well I personally would not do a “$1 adoption”, I do not think it is wrong. I think it is a matter of how God is leading your particular family. Remember, God askes a lot of people to give (and maybe never adopt) and $1 adoption is a way for them to do so conveniently and privately. Of course, ideally the body of Christ should be so tightly knit this wouldn’t be an issue, but we are not living in an ideal world.

I totally agree!!! In an ideal world, not marred by sin, this wouldn’t even be an issue.  But it is. And, among other things,  adoptions are outrageously expensive in most cases.

I have to disagree with you that the Bible says debt is wrong.  I do believe that  it does strongly discourage debt. (if you have a specific verse in mind, I’d be interested).

The Bible talks in Proverbs and Isaiah about the borrower being a slave to the lender.   Proverbs 37 also says that the “wicked borrow but do not pay back.” So Scripture does imply that debt is a bad idea.  Also, if I remember right, that is what Jubilee was, at least partly, about–the forgiving of debt.  Why would this be discussed if debt was sinful?

However, the Scriptures do say that if a man shall not work, he shall not eat. (implying that one should not beg).   The author of the 37th psalm also says that he has never seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging bread.   I guess the question would be, are the $1 adoptions begging?

On a side note, if we had not gone into debt, Sweet Cheeks would not have been able to come home when she did.  We prayed God would provide the money without borrowing.  We applied for grants (and would have received at least one of them, but they were out of money).  But He did provide a home equity loan when we refinanced our house a couple of years ago, we did not ask for it and that the lender said she had never seen it happen before. :)

Melodie comments further:

Which leads me to my final point: What are missionaries supposed to do if the can’t raise support (“beg”). Perhaps you believe that a missionary’s home church should support them entirely, and that would make sense. But do you really believe it is wrong for a believer to request financial assistance in all situations? I can totally understand the motive of your question.  Being that your family has been in missions for so long.   Let me say that raising support is not begging.  A missionary is working! And works harder than many people realize.  Many missionaries give up so much of their lives and themselves to work exclusively for the Kingdom, not  just being salt and light, but purposefully reaching out to unbelievers in countries many of us don’t even want to visit.     I believe the Bible addresses this:

In 1 Timothy 5  Paul tells Timothy that elders who work in preaching and teaching should receive double honor.  (I don’t know for sure that Paul is talking of monetary “honor” but it certainly would fit).  Then in  1 Corinthians 9:13 -14 says:  ”Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings?  In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel. “

This tells me that the church should support our missionaries.  There is one more situation I am thinking of but can’t find it and I’ve looked all the logical places I can think of.  Paul  is talking about how although he could have asked for support from this church, he was glad that he didn’t from this particular group.  (I’m thinking it’s also in Corinthians, but I cannot find it).

Working as missionary, or pastor is so very different than asking people to “donate”  $1 to adopt a child or anything else for that matter.     (just for the record, I get frustrated at ministry’s that ask for a “suggested donation” a suggested donation does not seem to be a donation at all– just my thought :)  .

I guess the $1 adoptions just remind me of  a chain letter, or a homeless person begging on the side of the road.   And I personally think that it takes away from the testimony of what God can do.

2nd Comment, much shorter answer :)

Melanie wrote that she was going to take a copy of  ”10 stupid things women do to mess up their lives” to the flea market.  This is NOT what I am saying at all.  I think Dr. Laura has some great insight (as well as some others) but I just don’t think it belongs in a church for “Bible study”  :)

Horses and Mice

Last night, Princess and I took our horseback riding lesson.  The last time I rode (a few weeks ago) my horse was acting funny, kind of bucking her head and walking funny.  I ended up getting off after about 15 minutes.   We checked her saddle and it was fine, so I didn’t get back on… fast forward 3, maybe 4 weeks to last night.  Through no fault of my own, I had not ridden since that night.  I wanted to ride again, but one night it had rained and was too wet to ride, another night our instructor worked with Princess on sitting properly in the saddle, another night we did something else…  you know, things come up.

So last night, I really didn’t think I’d be that nervous about getting back on Sandy.  Didn’t even give it much thought through the day, except that I was looking forward to riding again.   After all, it’s “just a horse” right?  Wrong!  I ended up being more nervous than I thought I would be.  Even as I was grooming Sandy I was thinking about getting on her and wondering if she would act okay.  Deep down I knew she would.  While we were there last week, someone else was riding her and she was doing fine.  But still…

I was nervous, and Sandy knew it.   I was doing almost everything wrong.  She challenged me but in the end, I won.    There were a couple of times I thought about getting off and being done with horses.  But I couldn’t do that– I had to win.   As we were coming home, I was thinking about how big God is, and how big the universe is.  Then I thought about how I was afraid because this 800 pound horse could have pummelled me to the ground if she had wanted.  A horse.  Really not that big compared to even a car, or a tree.  Then I wondered if the people that think they can be “god” had ever ridden a horse???

This morning, I had the opposite thought.  We live in the country.  We have mice.  It’s just a fact of country life.  Especially since we can’t have a cat.  Shane is allergic and gets miserable around them.  We could have a barn cat, but not sure how the choco lab would like him.  So we have mice.

I was thinking about how small a mouse is compared to us.  Yet that little mouse can terrorize our homes. Making noise in the night, chewing through walls, leaving little presents in the worst places.  Compared to a mouse, we are giants.  Yet, it is very hard and sometimes frustrating to deal with a mouse.  Muchless catch the little booger.  God’s sense of humor sure is strange…

A Great Day

Yesterday was such a wonderful day.  Worship service was very uplifting and touching.  The Spirit of God was definately present.  The lesson was very interesting.  Pastor Ward preached about the “Temple” (we are in a sermon series about the Holy Spirit).  He spoke about how the temple spoken of in Zechariah is not the temple in Jerusalem, but that “WE are the temple built by the Spirit”

The temple is God’s people and the Holy Spirit is “building” us day by day.  God dwells in our temple… what a great thought.  He quoted Zech 4:6 “Not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit says the Lord of hosts.”

Of course that brought to mind the folly of my humanness, and how ashamed I am of my sinfulness… how painful it is to think about God’s temple being filled with my sin!

Pastor also gave us our job.  Eph 1:18 “know the hope” Pastor gave us a vocational calling, as he put it, to serve God in his temple.  Seek the glory of God and share it with others.  What a wonderful vocation we, as Christians, have.   Do you share your glory with others?

Then class was very interesting.  We are studying Isaiah– the long way.  We’ve taken related detours along the way, our discussion on mercy was fantastic.

Have you heard of the group “CUFI” it stands for “Citizens United for Israel”  apparently this is an activist group headed by John Hagee, this group is calling for the bombing of Iran because they pose a threat to Israel.   I was appalled to hear that believers are actually calling for the destruction of a people– I won’t get into all the “pre,”"post” and “a” millennium discussion, but suffice it to say that this group comes from an extreme (at least I pray it’s extreme) pre-mellinial mindset.  For those of you that are pre-mellinial, please study it further.  God has unfolded his mystery.  In Eph. 3:6  Paul says “This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel”  (esv).

The church is not “plan B” it always was God’s plan… it is the prophesied in the Old Testament.  (I was greived and in shock to hear that some people actually believe that the “church” is not spoken of or prophesied about in the OT at all).  That God designed the church after Christ was on the earth… please if this is your view I beg you to reconsider… to read without bias.

For the record.  We hold an a-mellenial view, meaning that we believe that most of Revelation has been fulfilled.  I know it’s not the “popular” position but since when have I “tried” to be popular.

Then we had ladies fellowship last night.  Shane dropped me off early at one of the ladies house and we had a nice time together, and ladies fellowship was fun.  Sherri brought a hymnal and asked us to share our favorite hymns… then we talked about the morning lesson, and class and other assorted things.  Then about weddings.  One of the couples at church is getting married next summer (the sweetest couple ever).  Bubba is VERY excited and Christy calls him “their biggest fan” last summer, a year ago, Bubba went to Tim and asked him if they we’re going to get married.  (I’m not even certain they were courting at that time).

Shane and the children went to a church of Christ gathering.  (good for family relations, you know).  Funny he said the preaching sounded very reformed — not very armenian.   This man is a Dean at a church of Christ college so it was very interesting to hear this.  He also said they ran into several old acquaintances– that’s always nice.

One a side note… I took Bubba’s Afghan with me, that I’ve only been working on for 3 years, and finished it  He slept with it on his bed last night.  Yippee!!!!! Now I can move on to some other crocheting projects.  Like washcloths for Christmas gifts and a snood just for fun.   I can hardly wait…
